Welcome to the Sanskrit Department at Government General Degree College Salboni, situated in Koyma, Bhimpur, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal 721516, has been an integral part of the college’s journey since its establishment in 2015, merely a year after the college’s inception in 2014. From its inception, the department has been steadfast in its mission to uphold the legacy of Sanskrit language, literature, and philosophy.

In its initial years, the Sanskrit Department commenced its academic endeavors by offering general courses in Sanskrit during the academic year 2015-2016. These foundational courses aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Sanskrit grammar, literature, and cultural significance. Buoyed by its early success, the department expanded its academic offerings in the subsequent academic year, introducing a Bachelor of Arts Honours program in Sanskrit from 2016-2017. This expansion marked a significant milestone, providing students with the opportunity to engage in specialized studies in areas such as ancient scriptures, Vedas, Indian philosophy, and Sanskrit grammar.

At the heart of the department’s success lies its dedicated faculty, comprising four permanent professors with extensive research experience in Sanskrit studies. These esteemed scholars bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom, guiding students through the complexities of Sanskrit texts and nurturing a deep appreciation for the cultural heritage embodied within them. Aim

The Sanskrit Department at Government General Degree College, Salboni, has a straightforward aim to teach students about Sanskrit language, literature, and culture in a simple and accessible manner. We want students to learn Sanskrit well, so they can read and understand ancient texts easily. Our courses cover everything from basic language skills to understanding famous Sanskrit Mahakavyas, plays, stories and philosophical writings. Through our teachings, students not only gain knowledge about Sanskrit but also develop an appreciation for the rich cultural heritage it represents. We encourage students to explore Sanskrit beyond the classroom by participating in research projects, seminars, and workshops. These activities help students dive deeper into various aspects of Sanskrit studies, such as analyzing texts and understanding their historical and cultural contexts. Objectives

Firstly, our primary objective is to equip students with proficiency in the Sanskrit language, enabling them to read, write, and comprehend texts fluently. Through structured language courses and interactive learning activities, we aim to develop students’ language skills from basic grammar to advanced comprehension. Secondly, we aim to introduce students to the vast and diverse world of Sanskrit literature. By studying classical texts, including epics, poetry, drama, and philosophical treatises, students gain exposure to the rich literary tradition of Sanskrit. Our objective is to cultivate an appreciation for the aesthetic beauty, cultural significance, and historical context of these literary works. Thirdly, To ensure students are equipped for scholarly engagement with Sanskrit manuscripts, we emphasize proficiency in various scripts such as Brahmi, Devanagari, Odia, Grantha, Sharda, and more, enabling them to decipher and interpret ancient texts accurately. Additionally, we aim to foster an understanding of the cultural and philosophical heritage embedded in Sanskrit literature. By exploring themes such as morality, ethics, spirituality, and societal norms in Sanskrit texts, students gain insights into ancient Indian civilization and its enduring relevance to contemporary society. We seek to promote research and scholarly inquiry in Sanskrit studies.
